Miracle Mile and the Biltmore Are Sharing the Same Two Weeks This Fall

Two historic stages sit within a few minutes of each other in Coral Gables, and this season neither one is operating under quite the name you might remember. Actors' Playhouse just rededicated its home on Miracle Mile as the Dr. Lawrence and Barbara Stein Center for the Performing Arts, the first time the building has carried that name in its history. A short drive away, GableStage is deep into a season inside the Biltmore Hotel, the address it has called home since 1999, after a storm took away the one it had before.

That storm matters more than a footnote. GableStage began in 1979 as the Florida Shakespeare Theatre, performing outdoors at the Casino Gardens at Vizcaya. From 1987 to 1992 the company found a proper indoor home at the Minorca Playhouse in Coral Gables, until Hurricane Andrew destroyed the building. The troupe kept working anyway, staging shows at the Carousel Theatre through 1993 and 1994, before finally settling into the Biltmore in 1999 and becoming GableStage. Nearly three decades later, the company has picked up 64 Carbonell Awards along the way, the regional theater world's version of a Tony.

Actors' Playhouse has its own history of staying put through change. Founded in 1988 by Dr. Lawrence E. Stein, the company spent its first seven years in a converted movie theater in Kendall before partnering with the City of Coral Gables in 1995 to restore the Miracle Theatre, a $6.5 million project that stripped away decades of fiberglass paneling to reveal the building's original 1948 Art Deco floral patterns underneath. The company has since collected 90 Carbonell Awards of its own. This year's dedication as the Stein Center is a naming change, not a location change, but it marks the start of a new chapter after nearly 30 consecutive seasons on the Mile.

What's actually running this fall

Here is where the two calendars get interesting. If you map out what each venue is staging between now and the end of the year, they land on top of each other twice.

Line those dates up and you get two clean windows this season, October 7 through 18 and December 1 through 20, when both stages are open at once. For most of the year that overlap doesn't happen, since each company builds its calendar independently. This fall it does, twice, which means a resident who wants a two-theater week doesn't have to plan around a gap between shows. You can catch Jekyll & Hyde on Miracle Mile one night and the meteorologist play at the Biltmore a few nights later, all before the run closes.

GableStage's current show opens Friday, September 25, and runs on a Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday schedule through October 18. The Christmas overlap runs the whole month

The December pairing is the longer of the two. Actors' Playhouse's A Christmas Carol, The Musical runs December 1 through 20, the same three weeks that GableStage's museum-world comedy is in its final stretch before closing on the 20th. Actors' Playhouse's five Mainstage productions for 2026–27 go beyond the holiday run. After Jekyll & Hyde closes in early November, the season moves to the Tony Award winning Come From Away in January, then a new play from Donald Margulies, whose Dinner with Friends won the Pulitzer Prize in 2000. Margulies' new work, called Lunar Eclipse, follows a long-married couple across the 85 real-time minutes of a lunar eclipse, each phase of the celestial event tracking a phase of their conversation. The season then turns toward Rock of Ages before closing next summer with I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, a musical revue that first played the Miracle Theatre in 1998 and ran a full year the first time around. Subscription packages for the full season start at $225, and single tickets have been on sale since August 1.

Why the renaming is worth knowing about

A theater changing the name on its building is not the same as a restaurant changing its sign. The Stein Center dedication points back to the people who put up the money and the years to save a 1948 movie palace that had been sitting under fiberglass paneling for decades before anyone thought to strip it away. That restoration is the reason Miracle Mile has a working performing arts center instead of one more storefront. Knowing whose name is on the building now, and why, is the kind of detail that turns a night out into something closer to knowing your own neighborhood.

The same goes for the Biltmore side of things. GableStage's residency there isn't incidental. The company spent two decades moving between an outdoor garden at Vizcaya, a playhouse that Hurricane Andrew took away, and a temporary home at the Carousel Theatre before the Biltmore gave it a permanent stage in 1999. When you buy a ticket at either venue this fall, you are buying into a story about a building that survived something, not just an evening's entertainment.

Building the season around your own calendar

If you already have a fall routine that includes dinner somewhere on the Mile or a drink at the Biltmore, this is the year to build a show into it. Jekyll & Hyde and GableStage's current run overlap from October 7 through October 18. A Christmas Carol and GableStage's December show overlap for the entire three weeks leading up to the holidays. Neither venue requires advance planning beyond checking a calendar and picking a night, and both are close enough together that a single evening can include both if you're feeling ambitious.
